Fast Food: The Dream Vs The Reality

So you've seen that glossy billboard ad for the delicious Flame grilled burger on a fresh bouncy sesame seed bun, with perfectly melted cheese, immaculate shards of lettuce, the ripest juiciest tomatoes and relish oozing out in all the right places. Your stomach growls with yearning for the beautiful sandwich your eyes are beholding….So you make a bee-line for the nearest burger bar to order this wonder burger, you double check the poster in store to make sure your eyes were not deceiving you previously and low and behold there is your beautiful burger!! So you tell the cashier you would like to order the “super scrummy lumptious burger with extra cheese” and she gratefully takes your money and goes to prepare your lovely burger….

She returns and hands you a flabby grey lump of lard!

“But I wanted the burger in the picture” you exclaim indignantly. “THAT IS THE BURGER IN THE PICURE” she smugly tells you….

This is an all too common scenario, the gorgeous photos in fast food advertisements never really live up to expectations, so are they lying to us? Let’s take a look…....

THE MACDONALD'S BIG MAC

The Dream:

The Reality:

BURGER KING WHOPPER

The Dream:

The Reality:

MACDONALDS FILLET O' FISH

The Dream:

The Reality:

MACDONALDS SAUSAGE & EGG MCMUFFIN

The Dream:

The Reality:

(Just to gross you out) FATTY ARBUCKLE'S BEEF 'N' CHEDDER

The Dream:

The Reality:

I think we can safely say: what you see is DEFINATELY NOT what you get......

I hate those lies.....surely these companies can/should be done for false advertising?

Classic! You should watch the Michael Douglas movie called Fallen. In it, Douglas' character went into a burger joint and when he was given his burger which looked nothing like what was on their instore ads, he took out a gun.

He fired into the air.

He demanded that the burger be done to look as appetising as the one in the photo!!!

It really is a good movie and I enjoed it. It was done in the 90s

It's the most depressing reality, and yet we can't stop ourselves from coming back.

Haha, so true!! I've always wanted to do something like this and take comparison pictures of the ads and the reality. I think they don't use real food in the pics sometimes, or not the real food they're portraying... I know Baskin-Robbins for example used to use colored shortening for their pictures. (I used to work for B-R). An ex of mine who worked for them as well even went so far as to doctor up some shortening to look like ice cream and then tricked me into eating it. I once tricked a guy into eating wasabi I had made to look like green tea ice cream.

Taking pictures of food is really an art. It is a lot harder than it looks... I must admit that I think that the egg mcmuffin looks better in reality than the picture.

Ha, this is so true! You should try one with pizza pictures, the Pizza Hut/Domino's pics versus the real thing!

Well, would you still want to eat there if the pics of the real food was in the ads?

I don't care if it looks good as long as it tastes good...which it probably doesn't taste 'good', but edible.

I like the pics on TV dinner boxes vs the reality, those are quite different, too.
